Aspect ratio: What is it and why use it?

I have got a website update for you!

Not many people dwell on the fact that something called “aspect ratio” affects the compositions they use in their photographs. Sure, on Instagam we all use the 1:1 ratio (until shortly), but what does this mean? I have written a page for you to explain what Aspect Ratio is and how it affects your pictures!

Read it here and tell me what you think about it!

Middelburg 16:9

The 16:9 aspect ratio.

Kind regards,

Tieme

Hi Joan! Thank you! Do you crop your photos in any special ratio? I personally use my camera’s standard ration (3:2) and rarely 1:1.

Good luck with your editing and have a great weekend!

Great article Tieme with really wonderful examples. Cropping and determining the correct aspect ratio for the photo is part of the adventure for me. I shoot trying to get the most visual information possible and then crop down. Small changes and subtle differences make a big impact as you so wonderfully illustrated. Square is often the aspect ration that best suits my images – which is a format my grandfather, who died when I was 3, used in his photography

Hi Seedbud! Thank you very much! What a beautiful reason for preferring a ratio. And how wonderful that cropping is such a big part of your post processing 🙂

Very touching ode to your grandfather. Keep up the wonderful work!

      Warm regards,
      Tieme
